Delaware Valley Fast Facts
Introduction
The Delaware Valley is a region that borders both sides of The Delaware River as
it flows between Pennsylvania and New Jersey and then on between Delaware and
New Jersey into to the Delaware Bay (and eventually out to the Atlantic
Ocean). It includes counties from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and even
the upper right corner of Maryland (Cecil County). It is primarily seen as a
Tri-State (PA-NJ-DE) region including Southeastern Pennsylvania, Southern New
Jersey and Delaware, encompassing the Philadelphia Metropolitan area.
While
the region has the Delaware River as its anchor, the term "Delaware Valley" is
loosely used to identify as few as nine counties in PA and NJ immediately around
the City of Philadelphia or expanded to contain many of the counties surrounding
the nine, including New Castle and Kent counties in Delaware and Cecil County in
Maryland.
The greater
Delaware Valley area is a center for local and nationally known shopping
outlets and great bargains.
The Delaware Valley is home to the
hoagie,
cheese steak,
soft pretzels,
water ice and
Tastykakes. It offers some of the best pizza served in the
nation. (My personal favorite is white pizza with broccoli). Whether you
preference is ethnic foods, traditional American, organic or special dietary,
you have convenient availability to competitively priced general, discount,
health and specialty food stores.
The majority of the land mass is located in
Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Pennsylvania has the largest percentage of the
population, followed by New Jersey, then Delaware and lastly Maryland. The
largest cities within this region are: Philadelphia, PA; Camden, NJ; Reading,
PA; Trenton, NJ; and Wilmington, DE.
Philadelphia
is the center of focus for TV, news, sports, entertainment and its International
Airport. The Delaware Valley sits mid-way between the New York City and
Baltimore-Washington, D.C. metropolitan areas, which can be reached from
anywhere in the region by car or train in less than a few hours.
The Delaware Valley, the fourth largest metropolitan area in the United States,
has a rich heritage and culture, great entertainment and places to see, a
thriving population, wonderful communities to live and raise a family, excellent
schools and is the headquarters for many national and international companies.
